Rocket61. “Yay! Another randomly generated concept with inanimate objects and numbers that represent a weird inside joke!” some might say. Well, this is a ‘bit’ different. And how it is different is that it isn’t fully baked yet. There is concept and vision, but that is it. You see, in agile, we have what is called “increasing levels of granularity” which is a fancy way of saying that we plan what need to when we need to without trying to get to n-th degree of understanding at the very onset of an idea. Why? This keeps us focused on doing the right things first – the things that matter – the things that are most valuable instead of getting sucked into planning purgatory. This is the same for Rocket61 – right now what is important is seeing if the vision and the concepts are adaptable. I know, sounds odd, but let’s just see what happens.
What does Rocket61 mean?
Well, there is a “rocket” and there is the number “61”.
First the rocket. Rocket is actually from the Italian word “rocchetta” which means “little fuse;” little fuse = big bang! Obviously, everyone knows that a rocket serves the purpose of space travel but it is in the intricacies of this where Rocket61 gets its meaning. Rockets must break through the heavy atmosphere of the earth as this is their primary purpose. Rocket61 has to be, primarily, grounded in breaking through the heavy atmospheres of situations, spiritual oppression, and more that have attacked the church. In order to do this, rocket engines use propellants and work by “action and reaction.” In the same way, Rocket61 must be propelled by prayer and worship and relies on actual, tangible movement in order to see demonstrable change in the local church. Rockets also carry payload. We are not just going on a scenic trip here, the Christ-follower carries an important payload. They carry the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. The problem is that we oftentimes do not know how to deliver it. We stay locked up in our headquarters instead of taking this awesome power to the people who need it. For this reason, rockets also need sophisticated and cutting-edge systems in order to make it happen. All this is the purpose of the rocket. Oh, and just the fact that space is amazing. 🙂
Now for the 61. This refers to Isaiah 61 which starts with:
The Spirit of God, the Master, is on me
because God anointed me.
He sent me to preach good news to the poor,
heal the heartbroken,
Announce freedom to all captives,
pardon all prisoners.
God sent me to announce the year of his grace—
a celebration of God’s destruction of our enemies—
and to comfort all who mourn,
To care for the needs of all who mourn in Zion,
give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes,
Messages of joy instead of news of doom,
a praising heart instead of a languid spirit.
Rename them “Oaks of Righteousness”
planted by God to display his glory.
It goes on to say that these very people that we just delivered an awesome Jesus Payload to will go on to rebuild, revitalize, renew, and generally rehab everything around them. You see, our job as church leaders is not just to do work and mow the lawn and go to the hospital, it is to build teams of people who will take territory and revitalize everything around them (including lawns).
Rocket61 is currently just a thought of what it would look like to adopt Agile Principles into “the Church” and the local church. There will be more on what this means and how it will unfold at a later time, however, what is important right now is that the purpose of Rocket61 is to consult churches on what it means to move away from a command/control model to a family/teamwork concept. This is done by coaching churches toward a goal of challenging everyone toward continual maturity.
Where is Rocket61?
Right now it is slowly moving from heart to paper.
When can we expect more from Rocket61?
As we meet more people and create a team that can drive real change through inspection, adaption, and transparency, we will do more. Interested? Like being bleeding edge on stuff? Contact us.
Who is Rocket61?
Nobody right now. Just a vision.
